Zhang Peng Ju confessed that, lacking money for personal expenses, he armed himself with a knife, entered a grocery store, threatened the staff, and stole 145 million VND.
On September 3, Hai Phong police announced that the suspect, Zhang Peng Ju (a 39-year-old Chinese national), had been apprehended in Son La province after evading capture for over four days across multiple localities.
The incident occurred on the night of August 27 at a grocery store on Do Nhuan Street. A masked man stormed the premises, used a knife to subdue the attendant, stole a large amount of cash from the register, and fled the scene.
During the investigation, police identified Zhang Peng Ju as the suspect. He had entered Vietnam in June seeking employment and was residing on Do Nhuan Street in Hai An Ward.
He admitted that, being short on cash and noticing the store was busy with customers, he decided to commit the robbery. He prepared by dressing to fully conceal his identity—wearing gloves and a face mask—and armed himself with a fruit knife while waiting for the right moment to strike.
