From July 26 to 31, 2026, the Drug Crime Investigation Police Department (C04) of the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam hosted a workshop and training session aimed at enhancing the drug crime investigation and control capabilities of Cambodia's drug enforcement forces. This practical, annual cooperative activity falls within the framework of the yearly coordination program between the standing bodies for drug control of the two nations' national committees.

Building a strategic shield along the border

According to Senior Colonel Nguyen Van Cuong, Deputy Director of C04, Vietnam and Cambodia are neighboring countries that both face immense pressure from drug sources originating in the "Golden Triangle"—one of the world's largest hubs for drug production and trafficking. Given the complex and evolving nature of this type of crime, close operational coordination between the law enforcement agencies of both nations is an urgent and objective necessity.

In recent times, both sides have improved the effectiveness of information-sharing mechanisms—utilizing hotlines and Border Liaison Offices (BLOs)—while also rotating the hosting of briefing conferences and successfully collaborating to dismantle numerous joint cases. This training program served as a platform for in-depth professional exchange, allowing forces from both countries to share practical operational experiences. Key topics covered included: identifying drug-related crime trends in border areas; legal frameworks; strategies for apprehending wanted fugitives and armed suspects; measures to combat synthetic drug production and control precursor chemicals; and advanced forensic analysis techniques.

**Practical focus and enhanced professional exchange**

In addition to theoretical classroom sessions, a highlight of the training was the series of in-depth field visits and practical assessments.

On July 29, at the Customs Sub-department of Zone XV, the Cambodian delegation met with representatives from the Tan Son Nhat International Airport Customs Branch to discuss drug-related crime via air routes. Vietnamese Customs officials shared operational procedures and experiences in detecting contraband, as well as insights into the concealment methods employed by criminal networks.
